Goal

Mozaic Paper began the lunar series with the Year of the Dragon in 2012 for it is the most auspicious animal of the lunar cycle. To promote the new lunar notecard, a dragon screensaver calendar APP was developed for desktop application. A new design is created annually to celebrate the lunar holiday as part of the local culture. The rat is the latest design in the series sold at specialty shops.

Solution

Design a tri-fold card with a die-cut cover to show the elemental pattern (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) underneath. The year of the rat concept was inspired by the Chinese legend of the “Great Race” and traditional paper cutting. The rat wins the race due to his wit and becomes the first animal in the lunar series.

The t-shirt and tea towel illustrations are framed with Chinese lanterns and firecrackers to celebrate the rat winning the race.
